“Wake the Town” is an ongoing project dedicated to Jamaican Deejay music and those who made it. Deejay music was wholly original and existed (initially) in a time and place beyond the reach of record companies and copyrighting. Sprung from the Sound Systems, the music simultaneously taps into the despair and hope of Jamaica in the 1970s. This contradiction is my inspiration.
“Wake the Town” ist ein Projekt, das von meine Liebe und Respekt für Jamaican Deejay Musik und die, die es machten, kommt. Deejay war ganz originell und (am Anfang) existierte in eine Zeit und Ort ohne Plattenfirmen und Copyrights. Es kam aus die ‘Sound System’ Tradition, und spiegelt die Verzweiflung und Hoffnung Jamaicas in den 70er Jahren. Diese Gegensatz ist meine Begeisterung.

die 73 fotografien entstanden in buenos aires, im chilenischen patagonien, in asunción (paraguay), dem bolivianischen altiplano und in new york. oft verraten die einzelnen bilder ihre genaue herkunft jedoch bewusst nicht, denn sie sind keine reisefotografien oder ein versuch, das leben an bestimmten orten zu dokumentieren. deshalb spielen menschen eine auffaellig kleine rolle – und wenn doch mal welche zu sehen sind, interessieren sie nur auf eine abstrakte weise. mit meiner kamera versuche ich, dinge unabhaengig von ihrer alltaeglichen zweckmaessigkeit zu sehen und sie auf ihr bildpotential hin zu untersuchen. selbst ein muelleimer, ein sonnengebleichtes gerippe oder der nackte asphalt koennen einen atmospherischen, ja buehnenhaften reiz entfalten. dabei ist ausserdem spannend, strukturelle gemeinsamkeiten zwischen auf den ersten blick vielleicht ganz unterschiedlichen motiven oder szenerien zu erkennen und deren visuelle verbindungen deutlich zu machen.
Sophie Springer (1980, Berlin) studierte Kulturwissenschaften in Eichstätt und Buenos Aires. Immer wieder von fremden Orten und neuen Umgebungen angezogen, fotografiert sie seit mehreren Jahren. Nach einer Praesentation in den Raeumen des Artitude e.V. (Cuvrystr. 3-4, 10997 Berlin), ist es nun das zweite Mal, dass Bilder von ihr ausgestellt werden.

the 73 fotographs were taken in buenos aires, the chilean patagonia, in asunción (paraguay), the bolivian altiplano and in new york. it's not so easy, however, to identify their exact individual origins: not meant as a travel-diary or an attempt to document the life of particular places, this isn't what they are aiming for. therefore, people matter noticably little in these pictures - and if there are any at all, they are only interesting in an abstract way.looking with my camera, i seek to detach things from their functional meanings and explore their potentiality of becoming images. i try to capture the atmospherical appeal or even a theatrical aura of places and objects - no matter if the thing really is a trash can, a sun-bleached bone or a bare asphalt surface. moreover, i'm interested in creating visual interrelations between motives and settings which might at first seem very different from eachother by observing their structural similarities.
Sophie Springer was born in Berlin in 1980. She studied Cultural Studies in Eichstätt and Buenos Aires. Always attracted to foreign places and new surroundings, she has been taking pictures for several years. After a presentation at Artitude e.V. (Cuvrystr. 3-4, 10997 Berlin) in August 2005, this is the 2nd time her pictures are shown in public.
